Afghan Prosecutors Key to Beating Taliban

Without well-equipped and honest Afghan prosecutors to bring criminal cases against the country’s drug lords and terrorists, the sacrifices of our front line soldiers could be in vain. Police and counter-insurgency work alone is insufficient to stop the Taliban and narco-terrorists.

Don't Forget Afghanistan's Justice System

President Obama has reaffirmed our commitment to winning in Afghanistan and American and British Marines are on the offensive in Marjah. Winning in Afghanistan requires that we, our coalition allies and Afghan forces, defeat the Taliban insurgency, end the rampant narcotics trade, and overcome pervasive corruption among Afghan officials. A key to success in dealing with all three areas is rebuilding the Afghan justice sector.

Obama Makes The Right Afghan Call

In his December 1, speech at West Point, President Obama announced that he would send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan. The President's stated goal for this surge is to secure key population centers, train Afghan forces, transfer responsibility to a capable Afghan partner, and increase our partnership with Pakistan. The President's decision buys time for our Afghan allies to build institutions to defend themselves from the Taliban and should be applauded. Unfortunately, the President's progressive base is upset and even mainstream liberals such as NY Times columnist Thomas Friedman have expressed doubts about the President's decision.
